Sicilian style

While we were in Italy a friend of mine bought the latest Andrea Camilleri novel about the Sicilian detective Montalbano. You can see a picture of it here. It is 12cm x 17cm..

This series of books has to be won of the most beautifully produced that I have seen.

The paper is cream and the typeface clear. The book is bound so that it is easy to read. All in all (like my bicycle) a thing of perfection.

And it cost her 14 euros which is over £10. My friend didn't begrudge one cent of it. I don't know how the state of Italian publishing is at the moment but this publishing house in Sicily certainly knows how to produce a work of art.

Why UK publishers publish so many sized paperbacks, especially the huge ones you buy in airports, is a mystery to me. I really like the size of Montalbano.
