This week's event

Last week it was Radio Scotland, this week it is Waterstone's in Sauchiehall St, Glasgow on Thursday 28 May at 6pm.

I'm giving a talk on the nod off approach in honour of the Portuguese Nod off now being out. Last year I did one just before the Italian was published and some really interested and interesting people came by.

As it is a year, I thought I would look back and see what has happened in The Cupboard since then:

June 08 - Nod off in Italian was published. The voice was provided by the lovely Jessica Giuffre who comes from a distinguished acting family.

I went to Pinewood to record Dragons' Den.

July - The Cupboard transformed into L'Armadio and spent 5 weeks on the Shores of Lake Como, George Clooney-spotting. The Cupboard returned to Glasgow refreshed and energised.

August - Dragons' Den went out at the end of the month. It wasn't as bad as I had feared. That is the first time you see the edited version.

September - McGraw-Hill sent the contract to license the Nod offs for the American and Canadian markets. I got to know Garret Lemoi, the editor, who has wonderful name and sounds great over the phone

I had a very useful visit to Toby Mundy who heads up Atlantic Books in London. All done in a day by train. 6.30 am from Glasgow Central gets into Euston at 11.30. A pleasant stroll down into the area around Great Ormond Street brought me to Atlantic offices. (I realised it was next to the place where I first attended my yoga teacher Billy Doyle's class. He introduced me to yoga in the Kashmir tradition.) After my meeting at Atlantic I strolled back to Euston and caught the 3pm train back to Glasgow. I was hoping Atlantic Books would tuck The Cupboard into their publishing house, but they couldn't find the right space.

October - Contract signed and sealed with McGraw-Hill. They decide to rebrand series Relax & Learn. Great name, pity I hadn't thought of it first! On the strength of their name, I got our designer, the wonderful Fiona, to come up with some ideas (see below).

November- The Language Show at Olympia, London. I gave a talk on Subliminal Learning to a huge audience. Wished I was much more adept at speaking. I realised that my voice slows down when I am nervous and eyes of audience glaze over. What is interesting is how much interest there is at looking at alternative ways of learning.

December - we record Portuguese with lovely Victoria Willing. The recording is done in London with Peter Rinne of ARC Publishing. He must be one of the easiest people to work with. In fact we have worked together since the early 90s. He is forever going off to record the audio-books of really interesting people like Richard Branson.

April 09 - Nod off in Portuguese is published. It has a fantastic cover.

May - MacAulay & Co Radio Scotland, Waterstone's Sauchiehall St.

And next month sees the publication of the US editions. It will be fascinating to see how they do and all credit to Garret for his part in it.

So while I think not much has happened, looking back it has been quite busy.

Look at these lovely ideas Fiona has worked on. Wouldn't they make you look forward to a holiday!

Congratulations on all this. You have really made some impressive headway, sweating away in your Cupboard. Hats off I say. I don't agree that "Relax & Learn" is a great name though. Bland and uninspiring I'd say, more like a slogan or a subtitle.

Hope to make it to Waterstones.
